American Snowboarder Jamie Anderson Makes Olympic History

An alumnus of California State University Northridge, Jason Altzman has served as managing principal of Phoenix, Arizona's Aero Marketing Group since 2004. When he isn't managing the firm's sales and client relations, Jason Altzman enjoys snowboarding.

Snowboarding has been part of the Olympic Games since 1998, but the slopestyle event didn't make its debut until the 2014 Sochi Games. American Jamie Anderson won the inaugural event on the women's side, and the 27 year old entered the 2018 Pyeongchang Games with aspirations of becoming the first female snowboarder to win two gold medals. Despite treacherous winds, Anderson put forth an error-free run to record a score of 83.00, which was enough to beat second-place finisher Laurie Blouin, who scored 76.33. Anderson credited her impressive run in 30-mile-per-hour wind gusts to her calm mindset.

A native of Lake Tahoe, California, Anderson was home-schooled and spent a lot of time roaming through the woods and mountains as a child. A self-described "peaceful warrior," she regularly practices yoga, carries a backpack full of herbal remedies, and burns incense and bark to lower her stress levels.

Ben Mezrich is the author of several works of fiction and non-fiction, two of which have been adapted into successful Hollywood productions. In 2008, Mezrich’s non-fiction book Bringing Down the House was adapted into the heist drama film 21. The film was a financial success both in the United States and abroad, taking in nearly $160 million at the box office.

Two years later, the author’s book The Accidental Billionaires was adapted into the film The Social Network by David Fincher. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and generated more than $224 million in worldwide box office returns. The movie was a critical success as well, winning three Golden Globes and three Oscars, including Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin’s take on Mezrich’s book.

Recently, Ben Mezrich celebrated the release of his new book, Charlie Numbers and the Man in the Moon, which is the first that he has coauthored with his wife, Tonya. This marks his first children’s book in several years and seems slated for the bestseller list with a plan already in place to turn it into a television show. 

The new book serves as a follow-up to Mezrich’s Bringing Down the Mouse. Charlie Numbers follows a talented mathematician enlisted to track the theft of a box of moonrocks; he and his friends enter the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum’s paper airplane contest undercover to learn more about the thief. As he moves closer to the truth, Charlie begins to realize that he may have been pulled into a story that is much larger than stolen moonrocks.

Prior to any snowboarding excursion, individuals should familiarize themselves with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) Your Responsibility Code. The code highlights a number of important safety precautions skiers and snowboarders should observe at all times, from wearing the proper safety gear to using common sense when on the mountain.

Certain elements of the Your Responsibility Code involve good mountain etiquette. Whenever possible, individuals should make use of devices, such as ski poles or boards, to stop runaway equipment from traveling further down the mountain. Runaway skis and boards can pick up significant speed and pose a serious threat to the safety of others on the mountain.

The code also implores skiers and snowboarders to maintain control while on the trail. Individuals should never travel at speeds at which they cannot quickly and safely change directions or stop to avoid a collision. Similarly, individuals should observe all signs posted on a mountain and never take on a trail that is beyond their skill level.

If you are considering taking up cycling, one of the first things you should consider is the size of your bike. A well-fitted bike will provide years of use, but an ill-fitted ride will leave you in pain and prone to injury. Determine whether your road bike frame fits you by standing over the top tube with your feet on the ground. There should be just an inch or two between the top tube and your groin area. Any less and you might feel cramped, while too much space means may make it too hard to reach the ground. 

Conversely best way to judge seat height is to sit on the bike. Once on the seat, you should be able to straighten your leg out on the pedals when they are at their lowest point. 

Of course, all bikes differ from one another, and what fits you on one brand or model may not prove universal. To find the best fit, buy from a reputable shop where you can get professional help determining the best fit for you.

For travelers looking to challenge themselves to pack lighter, traveling with only carry-on luggage provides multiple benefits. While there are a few drawbacks, you may find that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Traveling with only carry-on luggage saves you from having to wait in a long line to check your bags. Additionally, you will be the first one out of the airport while everyone else waits at the luggage carousel. The only airport experience that may take the light traveler longer are security checks, since everything you bring will have to go through security with you. 

Traveling light can also lessen worry. If you check your bags, there is always the chance your bag will be lost or misplaced by the airline, leaving you without your luggage or causing your delay.

Lastly, getting around is much easier with less luggage. While you may be limited in what you can pack, you make up for it in mobility when the time comes to pack up and move to a new destination.

B2B Marketing Trends Dominating 2017

Studies out this year reveal four emerging trends in B2B: 

1. Millennials now play a greater role in B2B. Between 2012 and 2014, the number of 18 to 34-year-old B2B researchers grew by 70 percent. This segment now makes up more than half of all B2B researchers and continues to grow.

2. LinkedIn plays a significant role in B2B marketing. At least 92 percent of B2B marketers use LinkedIn for marketing with 66 percent reporting good results from using the site. 

3. Instagram offers untapped opportunity. While Instagram has become one of the fastest growing platforms and boasts of the highest social media interaction rate, only 33 percent of B2B brands use it. 

4. Content still reigns king. Up to 89 percent of B2B marketers use content in their marketing strategies. Additionally, 62 percent of B2B marketers noted improved success in their 2017 content marketing strategy as compared to 2016.

5. Mobile friendly is bottom line friendly. Up to 54 percent of all emails are opened on mobile devices. This is significant since 92 percent of B2B marketers distribute their content by email.

Ben Mezrich’s New Narrative Nonfiction Saga Woolly

Mezrich’s latest book, Woolly, continuously combines narrative nonfiction with the elements of a thriller in providing insight into efforts of young scientists at a Harvard University genetic labs to sequence DNA taken from a frozen woolly mammoth found in Siberia. Portions of the DNA sequence were spliced into the DNA of an elephant, with the aim of creating an embryo that could bring the woolly mammoth back from extinction. 

The broader goal of the research is to create capacities for reintroducing species that have long gone extinct and help to reverse the negative effects of human activity on wildlife populations and genetic diversity. Mezrich's lengthy work combines the nail-biting saga of contemporary researchers with expositions on past history that vividly recreate the world the woolly mammoth once inhabited.

Successfully packing for a trip begins with planning. Instead of procrastinating until the night or morning before departure, travelers should spend a couple days going over everything they need. 

This prevents adding items that will remain unused and waste space in luggage. Making a packing list may also be helpful so that essentials are not forgotten.

In addition to planning clothing items, travelers must plan the cost of their luggage. Trying to fit everything into a carry-on to avoid costly baggage fees can dramatically affect how many clothes and other items may be taken. Further, travelers should keep in mind that their airline’s baggage rules may be different depending on whether the flight is domestic or international.
